What is an influencer? Definition, types and what they cost

An influencer is a person who has built a community on social networks such as Instagram, TikTok or YouTube and whose recommendations shape what their followers buy and think. The word comes from “to influence”. What counts is not the follower count alone but the trust the community places in the person.

Definition in one sentence

An influencer is a content creator with an active, topic-focused community who recommends products, brands or ideas, either for payment or out of conviction.

How do influencers work?

Influencers publish content on a topic regularly, for example beauty, fitness, travel, tech or food. Brands hire them to present a product in a post, a story, a reel or a video. Three models are common:

  • Fixed fee per post: the brand pays an agreed amount for a defined deliverable.
  • Product exchange (barter): the influencer receives a product but no fee. This mostly suits small creators.
  • Commission (affiliate): the influencer receives a share of the revenue generated through their link or code.

Types of influencers by reach

Grouping by follower count is only a rough guide. The limits differ by source and platform.

TypeTypical reachStrengthTypical use
Nano influencerup to about 10,000close bond, high credibilitylocal brands, product tests
Micro influencerabout 10,000 to 100,000niche authorityperformance campaigns, niche products
Macro influencerabout 100,000 to 1 millionlarge reachbrand awareness
Mega influencerover 1 millionmass reachimage campaigns

For many companies, micro influencers offer the best balance of price, trust and audience fit.

What makes a good influencer?

  • Matching audience: the age, country and interests of the followers match your target group.
  • Engagement, not just followers: likes, comments and saves relative to reach say more than the follower count.
  • Authenticity: the recommendation fits the content they have posted so far.
  • Transparency: paid posts are labelled as advertising.
  • Provable results: statistics from earlier posts (reach, clicks, interactions).

What does an influencer cost?

Prices depend on platform, reach, format, usage rights and industry. There is no reliable flat figure. If you want to compare prices, Influsa shows the price per creator and package publicly and you can book directly.

Disclosure: advertising must be recognisable

In Germany, Spain and the rest of the EU, paid collaborations must be clearly recognisable as advertising (for example “Ad” or “Sponsored”). This protects followers and brands from warnings and fines. This is not legal advice; the rules of your country apply.

Booking influencers: agency or marketplace?

Brands can book influencers through an agency or directly through a marketplace. On Influsa, brands book posts directly with creators, payment is held in escrow, and the fee is 12% on the Free plan, 8% on Pro and 5% on Premium. No subscription is needed to book.
